Jack Lysfjord, PhD, is Principal Consultant for Lysfjord Consulting LLC. For over 26 years, Lysfjord has held a variety of management positions with Bosch Packaging Technology (formerly TL Systems Corporation) that produced aseptic processing equipment for producing injectable drugs. He is a member of the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering (ISPE), Parenteral Drug Association (PDA), American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS), the American Glove Box Society (AGS), The Parenteral Society (UK), The Isolator Users Group (UK), R3 Nordic (Nordic Clean Room Processing Society) and Barrier Users Group Symposium (BUGS) of which he is Chairman. He is a frequent speaker and course leader on the topics of aseptic processing, RABS (Restricted Access Barrier Systems) and barrier isolator systems in the US, Europe and Asia and has been the author and co-author for numerous technical papers and articles. Lysfjord holds a B.S. in Mechanical/Industrial Engineering from the University of Minnesota and an MBA from the University of St Thomas.

The figure skaters gathered slowly in the mahogany-paneled lobby of the majestic Mirror Lake Inn in Lake Placid, New York, flashing no smiles, barely saying a word. They had met in hotel lobbies in fancy street clothes hundreds of times in the past, but never for an event as devastating as this. On a cold night in late November 1995, they were to travel through snowswept Adirondack mountain roads to a nearby funeral home for a private wake for Sergei Grinkov, their colleague and friend who died of a massive heart attack during a skating practice the day before.

Washington Post sports reporter Brennan knows all the greats in figure skating?past, present and probably future. So she is superbly qualified to do a book about the sport. And, she counsels, make no mistake: despite all the talk of style and grace, it is nonetheless a competitive sport, but unique in that women are more important than men at the box office and in the officials' offices. Here she follows the season from October 1994 to the Nationals held the following February, concentrating largely on the likely stars of tomorrow. Of course she touches on the Tonya Harding-Nancy Kerrigan imbroglio and the arrest of U.S. champ Nicole Bobek on a burglary charge (later dismissed), but she is less interested in scandal than in showing how a year's work and tens of thousands in parental dollars can be lost by a couple of missteps in a single four-minute program. She demonstrates how the homosexuality of many?perhaps most?of the men in the sport is covered up, how quixotic the judging is and how the sport is becoming more like tennis as it attracts younger participants and more high-powered agents. Skaters train rigorously for years, only to have their ultimate success depend upon a four-minute program or even a four-second triple jump. Failure, or even hesitation, at this point often ends a career. Brennan has covered figure-skating for the Washington Post for 11 years. She brings a love of her sport and a crisp, clear writing style to a topic sure to interest many YAs. Loosely structured around the six-month competitive season, the text covers everything from the development of the sport, through changes in the competitive requirements, to the media bonanza that it has become. The author interviews and profiles many skaters, known and forgotten, coaches, parents, and judges along the way. While this is not exactly an expose, it is a hard look at the realities of a sport more applauded for its personalities and their appearances than their athletic excellence. Brennan doesn't flinch from chastising the U.S. Figure Skating Association for attempting to ignore the impact of AIDS on the sport or from discussing the homosexuality of many of the skaters. Easily read and digested, this title should make readers watch these athletes with new understanding and think twice before they commit to the demanding life of a championship figure skater.?Susan H. "Harding Had It All"

Christine Brennan put her Nothwestearn Journalism School education to good use. I was especially moved by the following passage:
"Tonya Harding possessed more raw jumping talent than almost any of them. More than Kerrigan, Oksana Baiul, Michelle Kwan, Nicole Bobek, Peggy Fleming, Dorothy Hamill, Kristi Yamaguchi, {or} Sonja Henie. Harding had it all."
I never heard such words applied to Tonya Harding before this book. I also didn't know before this book that Nancy Kerrigan wasn't well liked.
This book clearly shows that talent even unusual talent or skill doesn't compensate for hard work. If Tanya Harding had practiced and stayed in shape, she could have been famous instead of infamous!

Informative AND exciting, this book has it all!!!!

Christine Brennan is an exceptional writer, as this book is proof. As an avid figure skating fan, I expected 'Inside Edge' to be full of skating secrets and inside info, and it delivered. Wonderful tidbits from skating now and then. And the unusual scoring process of this sport was explained in full detail. I've read it twice, and I still want to read it more. Skating fans--this book is a MUST HAVE!!!!

Wonderful book!

My daughter, a figure skating coach, and I are on our 3rd copy: people keep borrowing this book and keeping it!

Brennan does a fine job debunking the "pretty girls in pink" myth about skaters, while still showing respect for the amount of effort and athleticism necessary to succeed in this sport. It's been said that Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did - only backwards and in high heels. Well, figure skaters do everything other elite athletes do, backwards/forwards and in the air while maintaining an illusion of fragility. Brennan recognizes that dichotomy, which is why this is such a good book.

If you know skating from the inside, elite or simply local, you will recognize much of what she talks of. If you enjoy politics, read this for incredibly sharp double dealing and backstabbing. But always, read it for the beauty she evokes.

Please do not fool yourself. If you want easy anatomy and deny the complexity of the oro-maxillofacial anatomy, then go ahead, buy this book. If you really want to be serious about oro-maxillofacial anatomy and want to know what you are doing, then look for a well-known or a recognized book in the head and neck anatomy!! i.e, Netter's Head and Neck, Dr. Sue Herring's or any other Head and Neck anatomy book. It goes without saying that head and neck anatomy is overwhelming, but its complexity reflects its clinical importance.
After reading the book I do not recommend this book.

Field Marshal Gerd von Rundstedt (1875-1953) was one of the foremost German commanders of the Second World War. After service on both the Western and Eastern Fronts during 1914-1918 he rose steadily through the ranks before retiring in 1938. Recalled to plan the attack on Poland, he played a leading part in this and the invasion of France in 1940. Thereafter he commanded Army Group South in the assault on Russia before being sacked at the end of 1941. Recalled again, he was made Commander-in-Chief West and as such faced the 1944 Allied invasion of France, but was removed that July. He resumed his post in September 1944 and had overall responsibility for the December 1944 Ardennes counter-offensive. Captured by the Americans, he was handed over to the British, who wanted to try him for war crimes. Only his ill health prevented this from coming about.

For World War II fans...

I have now read two of Charles Messenger's biographies on some of the most famous (infamous) German military figures from World War II, Hitler's Gladiator...about SS General Sepp Dietrich, and this one, The Last Prussian, the biography of Field Marshal Gerd von Rundstedt. Although I must admit that gathering information on such figures must be extremely demanding, I felt that both of these books dealt more with the units and or the times being discussed rather than being in depth narratives about each of their lives. I'm not sure if additional interviews would have been better...or what exactly is missing, but I felt that significant portions of "The Last Prussian" just regurgitated what is already known and tries to tie von Rundstedt into those events.
Obviously, the fact that von Rundstedt did not leave any memoirs made this biography an extremely daunting task...and it is likely that many of the people closest to von Rundstedt at the time, are no longer among the living. Still, this book seemed like the "Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" with a glimpse of von Rundstedt thrown in.
Despite all of this, I am sure that WW2 fans would still find the material interesting...particularly with respect to von Rundstedt's relationship with Hitler as described by the author.

Clearly written biography on a subject who was a major player in WWII but is very little known or understood. Messenger has done a good job of rounding out the personal history of this very talented man. He knew his profession from the ground up. He had the very rare talent of focusing on the main objectives and using a very highly talented staff to handle the operational and tactical details. Most don't realize that this man was selected to plan the defense against the West when he was almost 70, and was able to organize a very efficient defense in spite of very limited means and a very difficult political leader. For those looking for a revisionist history of Von Rundstedt as a willing tool of the Nazis this is not the book. He was a man willfully self isolated from politics and at the same time as all of us a part of his own environment.

DUPLICATE BOOK

My daughter read THE LAST DRAGON and loved it! I did some research and found THE LAST ELF so I ordered it special for her and it was shipped from the UK. Upon receiving the book we realized it was the same book as THE LAST DRAGON. I was kind of upset, I thought it was another book in the series. Not sure why it has 2 different names for the same book so was disappointed. Guess I didn't do enough research!

Unfortunate title to essential jazz journalism

Whitney Balliett is one of my favorite jazz writers (along with Dan Morgenstern and Ira Gitler), and I've enjoyed reading his pieces in The New Yorker since the 1960s. In the introduction to this book Balliett says he chose the title COLLECTED WORKS because "I like its ring"; that's a bit unfortunate because it gives the wrong impression. These are not his "collected works" but rather, as he again says in the introduction, "a distillation of many of the reviews and critical pieces that I have written about jazz." If you saved most of the original articles as I did, you would have a fairly decent sized pile of pieces that are not included here; perhaps even worse, you would notice that many of the articles appear in the book in truncated form (perhaps that's where the "distillation" comes in). One of the reasons I bought the book was because from its title and size (almost 900 pages) I thought I could take the Collected part literally, and I'd be able to free up some file cabinet space by discarding the original magazine articles. No way. I know this is a personal issue (mainly), but buyers should be aware of what they're getting (or not getting) here.

That being said, what you do get is absolutely worth having. Balliett knows the music as well as anyone and describes what he hears clearly and directly. He writes about the entire spectrum of jazz, from the earliest years of the music up into the avant-garde. Besides being deeply appreciative of the jazz masters (Armstrong, Morton, Ellington, Basie, Parker, Rollins, Coleman, to name just a handful) he writes about hundreds of musicians, good, bad, indifferent (but mainly good) who made it onto the jazz scene. He is particularly fond of good drummers (being a drummer himself). Reading The New Yorker you could be almost assured of getting Balliett's perspective on important jazz happenings in (particularly) the NYC area every couple of weeks or so. It was a wonderful steady diet of superb jazz journalism and criticism. It's great to have what's been included between book covers now, and hopefully what's missing gets published in book form some day, too. I really could use that file space.

The man definitely has got style. His colorful articles on Jazz musicians can be considered literary works. Sometimes you feel his lack of musical background. But with such a charming style, who cares...

In this collection of jazz criticism, Balliett writes of one of the all-time great jazz singers, Mildred Bailey, that she "rarely indulged in blue notes" and that "she was not emotional."

I admire Mildred Bailey precisely because of the bluesy and highly emotional quality of her singing, which has often brought tears to my eyes.

The two youngsters don their snowsuits and run out to celebrate. Poetic but simple, Shea's text rings true to the voice of a six or seven-year-old boy. Falwell's mixed-media illustrations bring the words to life and then some, particularly in the scene in which our hero (with construction paper cat-ears taped to his baseball cap) plays "Hey Diddle Diddle" on a pasta-box fiddle so his sister can jump over a crayoned moon in her homemade cow hat. Bold, lively colors and textures are montaged from cut paper, block prints, layered tissue, and fabric. The artist's skill with color will make youngsters shiver and melt, often in the same picture. The children's dark-eyed faces are painted simply but brim with personality. The text is printed clearly but unobtrusively along the sides of the pages. This book is a little gem. The moon isn't out the next night, and then, it's overcast. Finally, Vinnie's brother takes her to a snowy hillside to see the crescent moon in the daytime. The very appealing relationship between the siblings is warm and affectionate. Falwell strikes a good balance between the appealing indoor and outdoor scenes. Inside scenes feature sherbet colors, restrained patterns, and expressive characters, while outside, silhouettes capture the lovely tranquility of wintry nights. Falwell gets the infant's physicality just right; Shea zeros in on her personality. Nice. Julie Corsaro

Great for Toddlers

This is my son's favorite book and many of our friends kids about the same age. He's 14 months old and loves looking for the moon in the book. The book is on reading lists for elementery school kids, but small kids love it. The illistrations keep toddlers interested. Even though the story is a little long for them, it seems to hold their interest.

Clean Sweet Romance

I received an advanced review copy of this book from the author for an honest review. "Just the Essentials" by Shari L. Tapscott is an entertaining clean sweet romance. This is the story of Kinsley and Jack. Kinsley is a writer but still hasn't gotten a book published. Her family needs her to go and get her grandparents' cabin ready to sell. She agrees but isn't super excited about it. Kinsley just got dumped by her boyfriend so she decides that getting her grandparents' cabin ready to sell and having a chance to focus on her writing will give her a way to escape for awhile.

When Kinsley gets to the cabin it is in disrepair and there is no electricity, water, and patchy roof. Jack is the repairman that her dad calls to do the repairs. Kinsley is very attracted to Jack and he seems to be attracted to her. Will Kinsley and Jack take a chance on love?

There are lots of twists and turns in this book. I don't want to say to much and give anything away. I received this book late at night and couldn't put it down until I finished. This is just a sweet, humorous, respectful romance. A great story for all ages.

Probably the cutest and most lighthearted book I have read in a while

Okay, so I'll start my review off by saying my preferred genre is erotica or NA romance. But, every now and then I love reading sweet romances that make you want to cuddle with a cozy blanket next to a fireplace. I enjoy reading lighthearted romances where I smile way too much from the cute moments the main characters have and the fun, but none dramatic, scenes I read.

This book is exactly that kind of book. It was a moderate read, not too long and not too short. It calmed me reading it and I can honestly say I really liked both Jack and Kinsley's character. Especially Kinsley, because she reminds me a lot of myself. Plus, her character was an aspiring writer which I found really awesome! And the chemistry between Jack and her was amazing, but not overbearing.

All in all, it was a very fun and entertaining book to read and I do recommend it to book lovers looking for a lighthearted, but fun book to read.

I loved Just the Essentials

I loved Just the Essentials! A quick, lighthearted read that had me amused and laughing from page one.

When Kinsley, a recent college graduate and aspiring writer, finishes college with no clear career path before her, she agrees to spend the summer readying her grandparents’ cabin to be put on the market. Fresh out of a three-year relationship, Kinsley is hurt and not looking to get involved with another guy. But then she meets Jack (gorgeous Jack!) who is the local handyman. He’s good at everything – and is constantly popping up to help Kinsley out. Jack is drawn to Kinsley but he’s hesitant to get involved and be her rebound. But then, Kinsley’s ex-boyfriend shows up at the campsite with his new girl and things get very interesting…

I adored Kinsley’s character (and her coffee obsession!) – she is extremely likeable, easy to relate to, and has a great sense of humor. I was cracking up at the things she would say and think. Jack is also really likeable. I enjoyed the banter between the two of them and felt like their conversations were realistic for their age. Just the Essentials is a fun, lighthearted read with great dialogue! Highly recommended.

Definitely HOT alright!

Well, it's 3 in the morning in NZ, I have to get up early tomorrow for course but I have just finished reading Hothouse Flower and…. OH MY GOD!! It may be the fact that I'm sitting at my computer screen bleary eyed and fatigued, BUT! Words literally fail me right at this moment! While it was not my favorite book in the series, nor were Ryke and Daisy my most favorite couple (sorry but Lily and Lo most DEFINITELY take the cake!) it did NOT disappoint.

I have been an avid follower of the Ritchie sisters and the Addicted series since book one, so I was counting down the days (and then hours and minutes) until the release of Hothouse Flower. Becca and Kristie, if you guys ever read this, you have done an AMAZING job and I truly hope that you are celebrating with a glass of bubbly!

I really enjoyed Ryke and Daisy's story. I think it's safe to say that SO many people were waiting for their story to unfold. The build of Ryke and Daisy's relationship was done brilliantly and the character development was just wow! It wasn;t rushed, or forced and it's been a nice slow build from the previous books. We all knew that they would get there eventually so for them to finally have their own book… it's better than chocolate cake :)

God, Daisy… my heart just broke for her sometimes. There were so many points in the book where I imagined that her troll of a mother was real and I could just reach out and give her a good bi*** slap on Daisy's behalf. Poor thing. Ryke, I actually wanted to slap him too sometimes! I like that his character is rough and abrasive and somewhat withdrawn when it comes to sharing his thoughts/feelings with others, but I don't know how many times I screamed "JUST SAY IT?! TELL HER! TELL THEM?! WHY?! WHY?! WHY?!" Ugh, but of course, I fell in love with him throughout the book and he is now on my list of book bf's alongside Connor and Lo.

The supporting characters were AMAZEBALLS. You still get to see plenty of Lily, Lo, Rose and of course Connor so this pleased me immensely! Haha. I'm not making sense anymore, I'm THAT tired folks so bare with me. I'm starting to fall asleep on the keyboard.

Overall, I loved this book. It was so well written, it had me laughing, it had me close to tears, it had me in screaming fits threatening to throw my kindle at the wall…. it had it all really! Buy this book! You will not be disappointed!!

Oh! and before I forget! **FAVE EXCERPT**

I hike over to where Rose stands, her five-inch heels sinking into the dirt. Connor has his arm around her waist, and he tries to kindly take her purse from her, but Rose swats him with it.
"I'm not lying," she says. "It smells foul."
"It's probably the f***ing pit toilet," Rkye tells her. "You passed it in your car on the way here."
Rose shakes her head. "It's closer." She pinches the bridge of her nose and gags dramatically.
"Maybe it's your own stench," Lo says, holding Lily to his chest like she's a part of him, a piece that had been missing this whole time. He seems happier. "B**** No.5"

LOVED that comeback. OMG! Loren Hale, I love you! Hahahahaha. Enjoy the book guys!

I cannot express with words how I felt about this book! I had been waiting for Daisy and Ryke's story since they were first introduced!! I absolutely loved this book once again these authors did not disappoint!
What I love about the Ritchie sisters is they have the talent of being able to make the characters real, 3 dimensional, explosive, scared, doubtful; and each of their emotions touches you so deeply you can't help but fall in love all over again each time they appear in a scene of the book! Not every author has that talent..but the Ritchie sisters have mastered that talent! There is not one character in this book that I disliked or didn't understand! I'm read a lot of books and in each book I've read this far I can say there is always something that I don't like and this is the first time where I literally canno think of one thing I dislike or felt bothered by in the book!
Daisy was everything I imagined her to be and more! She was wild and mouthy and completely different yet strangely similar to both rose and lily! It was so beautiful seeing a character that was so different than her sisters but shared some of lilies insecurities and some of rose's strength yet she had so much of her own personality and it was woven into the story so beautifully! It completely wowed me!
And Ryke!!!!!by the end of the book he had me cursing and throwing the fbomb around like it was nothing! God I loved him! Everything about him drew me deeper and deeper Ito his character and I was able to completely dismiss my original opinion of him( which was never bad) but made me fall harder and harder for him! Both Loren and Ryke became two special characters for me! Even Connor who I loved in 'kiss the sky' is special to me! I felt like Ryke held my hand throughout the story..there wet lots of ahocking moments that had me gasping and scared for the future of the these characters and by the time the ending came I was completely contempt with the resolution and I realized how attached I was to their circle, their banter, their family! I absolutely just loved it!

I refuse to say more because I think everyone should buy this book..and not just this one but the entire series!! I seriously cannot wait to read the next book which will be Loren and lily and I'm hoping soon!!! Meanwhile get this series and enjoy, you won't regret it. The only thig you'll regret is not getting it sooner!!

Loved it more than chocolate cake

OMG that was insane! This series just keeps getting better and better. Daisy and Ryke's story was just so intense. I feel like I need to take a deep breath.
Daisy is finally 18 and we all couldn't be more excited. She and Ryke have been trying to keep their intense feelings at bay for some time. As we've witnessed in Kiss the Sky. Lines have always been a little blurry with them but now it's about to get a whole lot more complicated.
We also see the rest of the gang dealing with their crazy lives and trying to keep it all together.
This kind of book you can't say much without spoiling any of the deliciousness. I laughed, I cried, I fell in love with "Raisy". Now I want more, more, more! I could read about this family forever. I love this series more than chocolate cake ;)
