"You could just fill that gap on that second shelf"

For those unfamilair to The Game, Sherlock Holmes was an historical figure, Dr. John H. Watson his biographer, and Arthur Conan Doyle was Watson's literary agent. Watson's stories have many internal inconsistancies, and it is the job of the Sherlockian (Holmsian, if you're British) scholar to unravel Watson's tangled threads of dates, personalities, and facts. The first period of Higher Critisism was the 1930s through the 1950s, producing some of the greatest and most beloved works of Sherlockian scholarship. Dakin's book came out in 1972, at a time of change in society and Sherlockian society (the removal of the capitals from "Higher Critisism", "Sacred Canon", and "The Master and The Doctor"). Dakin still played the Game, but Holmes was treated less like an Olympian and more of a mortal. His book was the forerunner to the Great Boom of the 1970s (generally recognized as begining with the publication of "The Seven Per Cent Solution") and the reverberations of ASHC are still being felt today. No Sherlockian library should be without it, and the only reason mine was until 2010, is because of the relative rarity of it. Yes, "Thanks, Amazon" for making it possible for me getting a copy.

An Essential Sherlockian Volume

D. Martin Dakin's 'A Sherlock Holmes Commentary' is essential reading for anyone interested in Sherlockian studies. Other than appearing on the the venerable and still highly relevant Shaw 100 list, Dakin's book continues to be referenced by old and new Sherlock scholars alike. In the 300 or so pages that make up Commentary, Dakin reviews all the major Sherlock themes, controversies, chronological inconsistencies and textual mysteries that have plagued and delighted (often times simultaneously) scholars for decades. Whether or not there's a gap in your bookshelf, Dakin's tome is essential.

Everything you need to know about Holmes

If you have read the Sherlock Holmes stories and have had any questions about specific details in the works, this book probably has the answers. It is not only a fun book to read in itself, it is also very informative. For example, the book included debates among scholars on where exactly Watson was shot during the war and why his wife called him James instead of John. There are also debates on what years that events in the stories actually took place and where 221B Baker street is actually located in London. It was fun to contemplate these details along with the author, especially because his writing style, while scholarly, is still conversational and easy to follow.

Bob Bergin's Flying Giger Novel

I have the benefit of a friendship with the author that enabled me to hear these stories directly from many of his distinguished AVG friends. They were all charming gentlemen, highly articulate, vivid in their recollections and poignant in their speech. They told as good a tale as Bob Bergin tells in this book, which itself is a great story that captures much of the history and a good deal of the personalities of the key players involved - the characterizations of Ed Rector, Chennault, Chou En-Lai are particularly sharply drawn in my view.

What I thought the book captured with great skill was the vacuum created by a war situation, a war at the outset before too many dishes have been broken, before the true dimensions of the conflict, and the real zeal of the contestants, has been revealed. Bob writes in a way that conveyed the sense of a brewing conflict at the point when people are still adjusting to political realities acted out in capital cities, and new forces are positioning themselves for advantage on the fields that will be the center of the coming contest.

Commerce was still possible, though new "rules" were being negotiated and alternatives to the normal course of business were being worked out. Relationships across borders were fluid, and old grudges/lingering historic animosities were bubbling to the surface.

Bob also accurately renders the somewhat confused situation confronting those in the business of intelligence collection in such a context, and does a very nice job depicting the murky context in which the newly built OSS had to function upon establishment. Targets had not yet emerged with clarity. National level priorities were broad, and vague, and provided only the sketchiest guidance to people on the ground. Opportunities led down many paths, and a good number of dead ends loomed large. Hours and hours spent in tedium punctuated by moments of terror.

Great story. Nice fit with the earlier volumes that dealt with more contemporary situations.

Meet the Flying Tigers

"Spies In The Garden: A Novel of War and Espionage" by Bob Bergin takes place during the Japanese invasion of Burma and China. The book centers on the actions of the Flying Tigers (the American Volunteer Group). The book provides a good history of the Flying Tigers wrapped around the story.

The author knows the history of the Flying Tigers. I enjoyed his description of the pilots and their actions. The story begins in November 1941. The fictional hero, Harry Ross, is an American spy working undercover as a writer. He witnesses their early training. The training has with disaster after disaster. The Flying Tigers improve as the story advances into a force feared by the Japanese. Bob Bergin leaves no doubt that he views their performance as far better to the British Royal Air Force.

The narrative commences in Rangoon. Here Ross makes contact with the Flying Tigers. Ross also meets father and daughter Louie and Lucy. Louie is a trader. He supplied lavishness goods to the Chinese Nationalist leaders. Daughter Lucy is stylish and classy as well as beautiful. She and Harry become platonic friends.

Bergin tells a good story. Harry always seems to get out of the jams he encounters. His relationships with Sue and then Tai Li provide information for his work. He receives a Shanghai girl as a reward from Tai Li. She is in bed with the enemy and provides her pillow talk with the Japanese officers to Harry. This endures Harry with his superiors.

By July 1942, the Flying Tigers are winding down. Chennault becomes a Brigadier General. He finds himself working under General Joe Stilwell. We experience the differences between them. We also encounter the differences between the different arms of the Intelligence Services.

Harry does not seem to comprehend all that is happening and its consequences. Ross' controller Doyle steers him and cautions him about getting caught up with politics.

We are left to contemplate what happens next as the book concludes with the end of the Flying Tigers in July 1942.

There is a final two-page wrap up at the end of the book - "What Became of Them?" It gives a brief winding up of the unanswered questions.

Bob Bergin knows the Flying Tigers. He tells a good story from an American point of view. If you like war, espionage, seduction, and intrigue this book is for you. Moreover, do not be surprised if you learn about the Flying Tigers along the way. I recommend buying the book. Mr. Bergin gives a good story and history of the Flying Tigers for your financial investment.

KÜNG's PROPOSALS FOR A 21ST CENTURY CHRISTIANITY

Hans Küng wrote in the Foreword to this 1988 book, "This book is a document of a theologian's intellectual career. It discloses the standards and guidelines I have followed as I do theology and as I intend to go on doing it. This path led in a period of around three decades through confrontation with various Christian traditions to a truly ecumenical theology... 'My' hermeneutics... has always been seeking internal Catholic and ecumenical consensus..."

He observes that "the death of religion expected in late modernity has not taken place... Not religion, but its dying off, was the grand illusion." (Pg. 7) He suggests that each confession (Protestantism, Orthodoxy, Catholicism) "should preserve what is good in its own tradition, but it should overcome its sectarian limitations and accept what is good in the other confessions." (Pg. 59) He argues that the "unconditionally reliable reality... is not the Bible texts and not the Fathers of the Church, nor the Church's magisterium, but God himself, as he spoke for believers through Jesus Christ." (Pg. 62) He asserts that "Through historico-critical research on Jesus, Christian faith is historically justified ... and protected against both churchly and unchurchly misinterpretations... There must be no contradiction between the Christ of faith and the Jesus of history." (Pg. 111)

Later, he concludes that "We must not forget the followers of other religions are to be respected as such, and not to be subsumed in a Christian theology." (Pg. 236) Other religions can have a "positive validity," and are "conditionally true," which, "so far as they do not contradict the Christian message on decisive points, can by all means complete, correct, and enrich the Christian religion." (Pg. 254)

All of Kung's theological works are challenging and well worth reading; this one is particularly noteworthy for its focus on theological "method."

Interesting Thesis From a Prolific Writer

One can admire the output of this leading theological writer. Over 78 entries alone on Amazon.com. This book's thesis is yet another extension of the modernist mindset, that just as science has learned that truth develops and matures as it progresses, so should theology. He interestingly hypothesizes that the real turning point in history was Luther succeeding in his arugument with Erasmus over original sin. For one who doesn't confess the inerrancy of Scripture, Kung easily feels the mistake lies with the church going with Luther. That's the prevailing case in his argument, shift the paradigm to reflect where current critical scholarship is on Scripture. Interesting account, but didn't sell with this believer.

Hmmmm...MAJOR SPOILERS!!!!

I did not like it. Every other chapter was him sleeping with another girl or wanting to OR it was her apologizing. They were not a couple but were bickering children. He did not want to forgive her for her big reveal and was mad that she slept with Max but he basically hooked up with every female in town while she was gone and kept his confrontation with her father a secret. He was hypocritical and a jack butt. I did not like him one bit but I did adore Max and really wished she ended up with him. He would never have treated her the way Luke did. Luke slept with a girl because Maggie took Max's phone call in front of him. Luke then came home the next day and gloated about it to Maggie as "payback". I HATED him. He had NO redeeming qualities. The reader also had to read about that hook up and how great the sex with this girl was. Then at the end after Maggie's big reveal and after Luke gets all mad and goes off, he considers hooking up with another girl. He spent the ENTIRE book wanting her back, then he sleeps with that one girl, then he wants Maggie back, then after he has her, he goes off on a 3 week break and wants another girl. I would NEVER trust him. At least Maggie was in a relationship when she had sex with Max and had only been with him a few times at that and never thought of another guy after she got with Luke again. He was NOT worth the dirt on her shoes and if I was her brother, I would never let him be with her. How can her twin brother watch his friend sleep with random woman after random woman for 2 years and still want him for his sister??? What a bunch of stupid idiots!!!! I am so mad that I spent my last bit of my "book allowance" on this story!!!

One Word: Luke

Love the effing cover!!! Jeremy he's a good brother, "Maggie, there is no effing way you're staying here in New York, let alone working in a goddamned strip joint." Luke after years you can tell her still hardcore for his girl, "I stayed up the rest of the night planning my mode of attack to win her back, worrying she might leave, or worse, stay with Max, and I'd never get my girl again." He's real persistent as well, "go ahead, baby. Keep running, but I'll never change my mind about you. It's a waste of time to try. Cause this isn't over." I loved this book losing your first love, finding it again, going through s*** to get back to where you were it's like a fairytale!

I absolutely adored this book! Stay by Kelly Mooney was my first read by this easy to love author, because she knows how to deliver a beautiful, raw and emotional love story, one that left me lusting for more, still prying to keep the door from closing as I couldn’t leave her characters. Maggie and Luke were perfect together, being her brother’s best friend they shared an attraction and bond that made their relationship impossible to resist. Luke was so sweet, sexy, and adorable. He really made up for what Mags went through with her parents, who were forever absent from her life, favouring her twin brother Jeremy and supporting his needs, whilst Maggie’s dreams were suppressed constantly neglected, she was a strong and thoughtful girl towards other people’s needs when her own accomplishments never saw the limelight, stuck in second place, she would pick herself back up again, and look at new ways to reach her goals. Mags was definitely a girl who suffered from emotional and physical scars, the fact that she had Jeremy, Luke and Dean around to make her smile made the pain tolerable and hidden, but when her future alters and fearing the impact on her loved ones, not wanting to jeopardise their future, she decided to run leaving her dream man behind with confessions and Luke a broken man. I really felt for Mags as she tried to find peace and acceptance with her new life, and Max was the perfect guy who made her confront her demons. Now Luke, god I just loved him lol, the guy was romantic, sexy and unrelenting to get her back because she was always going to be his. Kelly Mooney really brought tears to my eyes reading his pov, my heart ached to console him as he fell deeper into a dark hole, unable to exist and relied on woman, drink and pills to numb thoughts of his loss. Now he did make my bad list when he played around and acted immature, because he couldn’t handle seeing Mags with Max, I know he was hurting and that he still struggled to overcome his pain relief to deal, but his behaviour and sexual antics kind of tainted what he shared with Mags and his appeal slightly slipped, I hated reading it because I loved his character and I wanted him to stay perfect in my eyes, good thing he did know how to redeem himself and that’s why he’s book boyfriend material for me, we all make mistakes right? This was a romantic read which I loved, drawing me into a world of heartache, loss, inner strength and second chance love as Luke Matthews fought to get his dream girl and his life back on track.

About the Author
Raymond Briggs is one of our most respected and beloved artists. Born in Wimbledon Park in 1934, he studied at the Wimbledon School of Art and later at the Slade School of Fine Art, and went on to produce a treasure trove of work. This is one of my favorite books -- any time of year

This is one of my favorite books -- any time of year. Brilliant, droll "travelogue" done by Father Christmas in his off-season. Captures the essence of each location visited -- cliche, yes, -- but extremely well done and wickedly funny. I love to give this as a hostess gift at Christmas.

Father Christmas - off duty

This is the most wonderful companion to Father Christmas, a sophisticated art cartoon offering a humanist view of the the rotund red clad benefactor of so many childrens dreams. He spends his summer hols, trotting from place to place doing his best to blend in and not be recognised. The fact that he has to use valet parking in Las Veagas for his sleigh and raindeer not withstanding. With fantstic illustrations which please year of year, it is a Raymond Briggs must have book for every family, preferably as a pair with "Father Christmas" the slightly irreverend look at Christmas deliveries and their logistical problems.

Greatest Holiday/Vacation book ever

Absolutely my favorite book of my childhood. Briggs-Father Christmas the original is a close second. I wish this author and illustrator had done a few more in the series.

You know what? Don't buy it, because then there will be more copies available for me on Amazon for my friends and family
