Tough Love

Okay I am very found of the old, old Harlequin Romances, because of the lack of sexual content in them, but a lot of the time the books do have violent, mean, harsh, or abusive alpha males, this book is one of them.
Jay de Rojas, who is a Mexican,(so his first name would be pronounced Hay)fell in love with Beth Kerri the moment he set eyes on her, but because of his late sister-in-law Karen, being English, he transferred his hatred of Karen who made Jay's brother Alfredo and little Mateo's lives miserable, to Beth.
Any thing in trousers would do for Karen, she even made out with the ranch hands. This broke Alfredo and Jay's father's heart.
Jay their father and Alfredo were aware of her addiction to sex, but Alfredo didn't care about her addiction, he loved her, so he would turn a blind eye on her carryings on. Jay saw this as a weakness.
He hired Beth, after she passed out at the interview(???), for a tutor to 9 yr-old Mateo so he could get ready to go to school in England as Alfredo wanted him to, Jay then started his conquest of Beth, yet he still saw her as being a woman who could easily hurt him by turning into the same kind of woman as Karen.
Only Beth had her own demons, her father had been a sex addict, and abused her mother mentally, until her mother became a door-mat to the women her father brought home to flaunt in front of her and Beth.
She had told Beth that her father was kind and loving before they married, but changed into this abusive monster after the honey moon.
Beth saw all men as capable to this kind of behavior and so she planned never to marry.
Enter Felicia a black haired young woman who wanted Jay for herself. When she noticed Jay's interest in Beth she took a pin from her hair while they were out riding and stuck Beth's horse Toltec, causing Toltec to run away with her Beth forgot all the things Jay had taught her about riding and just hung on to Toltec's neck. As they got to a ravine, Jay was able to stop the horse just in time.
Little Mateo saw what Felicia had done and he let Jay know. Mateo loved horses, and he couldn't understand anyone hurting one of the gentle horses on his uncles land.
So Felicia's actions backfired and she was taken home in disgrace.
But the whole time Felicia was at the ranch, Jay took special care of her, treating her lovingly, and Felicia told Beth, Jay was hers.
Because Jay was so attentive to Felicia, Beth took her at her word. Even though every chance Jay had he was playing tongue hockey with Beth.

Lovely romance!

After facing two fairly recent bereavements, Beth is anxious to take a tutoring position abroad. The job of governess to young Mateo takes her to Mexico. Her employer, Jay de Rojas the boy's uncle, is demanding and emotionally disturbing. Jay is intensely attracted to Beth and he pursues her. He's frustrated with Beth's continual rejection, believing it's because of horrible scars on his face. Beth has her own scars, but her's run deep inside and feed a fear of men that holds her back from ever loving a man. This is an emotional read. I loved how Jay refused to give up until he knew all of Beth's secrets. Lovely romance!

Here described is Toronto psychiatrist Whitton's research regarding the Bardo, the state between incarnations. Whitton found that if he used hypnosis to regress patients to past lives and especially to the Bardo, in which the soul is said to choose the circumstances of its next life to work out certain personal problems, outstanding results occurred. When patients realize that they have chosen their present circumstances, their symptoms abate or disappear, replaced by a healthier attitude. This may be a new game people are playing, but as a therapeutic technique, it works for Whitton. Apparently no one else has yet tried to repeat his results. OK, but...

This book is fine for people new to the topic. It details how events in past lives affect what's happening in the current one. Has only a smattering of info about life BETWEEN lives. Also tells of famous cases historically. But if you've already read very much on the subject, read Journey of Souls by Michael Newton (and see the reviews), which addresses much more about about life BETWEEN lives.

reincarnation have gone. There are many good works regarding past-life regression, and most of them hint at or touch upon the time between lives. But Whitton and Fisher have brought that "between-time", known as "bardo", into greater focus.

With thorough research and careful follow-up on their case histories, the authors demonstrate effectively and powerfully how our soul evolution is "decided" prior to entering into another physical lifetime. As someone who deals in life, death, and quality of life issues on a daily basis... I have always been fascinated by what lies beyond. This book took me deeper than I have been before and led me to think about issues in a different light.
I have always wondered why some people are born into luxury, and others famine- some into health, others in bodies that can't even last through childhood.
In seeing that these circumstances could be the result of our own choice, for a spiritual goal, It helped me to deal with my everyday frustrations about the inequalities we see around us.
This book was fasinating, and thought provoking.

Roberts Liardon makes an outstanding job writing this book. He mentions some things that perhaps other historians do not find easy to say. I have not finished reading the book yet but it seems to me that the style and order Liardon has arranged for his work is excelent.

A Good Book To Use For Devotions

Ever thought about how John and Charles Wesley made it to America? Did you even know they had come? This book gives brief biographies of many spiritual leaders. You will enjoy reading both the familiar stories and the not so familiar facts and details of their lives.

Jonathan Edwards, Charles Spurgeon, and Dwight L. Moody are just a few of the more then eleven lives detailed in this book. As the author takes you on their journeys you get a better understanding of the time in which they lived and the work they accomplished. You will see God's hand in the details of their lives and be moved to serve Him better.

This book is an easy read and great for devotions. You can divide the chapters or just study one person a day or week. A great read for both men and women as you see how the Lord can work in anyone's life no matter the circumstances. I enjoyed the stories of these great servants of the Lord and am sure you will too.

Wonderful new book on Disasterous All-Time Worst NBA team...the 9-73 Philadelphia 76ers from 1972-73!

Very interesting new book out on disasterous season of '72-73 Philly 76ers. Everything was set - an naïve owner (Kosloff), untested & overawhelmed Coach (Poor Roy Rubin) and amateur GM (Dejardin). Amazing they had to advertise in local Philly Inquirer classified section for this NBA Head Coach job! Yes 76ers were undermanned (a few yrs from their reknown legendary '67 Championship team) but they had some solid parts. Problem was no "go to guy" (Billy Cunningham had jumped to ABA Carolina Couagars), no legitimate Big Man (Chamberlain traded to Lakers after feeling team reneged on his contract). Then the ensuing trades...boy what a disaster they were, often lopsided. To add salt to the wound, the Seattle Super Sonics literally "stole" John Brisker from them and even there they got screwed by the league office.

As a longtime knowledgable NBA & Philly fan, I often search for the rare sports book that tells me something informative/new that I didn't already know. This book was great...literally took you back to the early '70s after Jack Ramsey had left (and gutted the team with some of his own poor moves as GM but also rightfully criticized ownership for not being committed to winning). The author (Charley Rosen) takes you thru pre-season into the season....game by game, detailing how under-manned and undercoached the team was. Along w/crippling trades and disrespect to the final remaining player of the '67 Title team (Hal Greer) this team must have been painful to watch. Plus the team held out hopes that after the season they might have legit shot at NCAA Stud Bill Walton going hardship in upcoming draft....of course Walton wanted nothing to do w/76ers and their losing ways.

A GREAT read that I'd definitely recommend...best new Philadelphia 76ers to come along in awhile. Great gift for upcoming holidays for that longtime fan who'll appreciate how rock bottom this once proud franchise became before becoming bona fide "A" team, beginning in '73 drafting Doug Collins, acquiring ABA star George McGinnis in '75 and then the SuperStar himself (Dr J) in '77. Amazing how this team went from 2nd tier players to bunch of All-Stars in literally 4-5 yr timeframe. Complete transformation that was prompted by new ownership (in '76 Fitz DIxon purchased team for $8m) and new/disciplined Head Coach (Gene Shue).

As a lifelong fan of the Sixers and author of "Season of the 76ers" about the 1967 NBA title team, I cannot believe the number of errors in Rosen's book. Who edited this mess? The 76ers beat the San Francisco Warriors in 67, not 'Golden State'. And it's Rick Barry, not RICH Barry. And it's Dave Zinkoff not Dave ZinCoff. And you couldn't go to the Temple U. Urban Archives and find one picture of Rubin....or maybe even two? Or a team photo, even? The entire morgue of the defunct "Bulletin' is sitting right there. I give it a one star pity rating. The title of this book matches the work done to create it....nuff said.

A book on one of the worst teams in sports history

It isn’t often that one can find a book on losing teams or seasons so when I saw that a book was written on one of the worst teams in professional sports history, I was happy to obtain a copy for review. From the description, I was hoping to be entertained while reading the book and to learn a few things about the team.

That hope was partially fulfilled in Charlie Rosen’s recap of the 1972-73 season of the Philadelphia 76ers, a season in which they only won 9 of 82 games held the record for the worst season in the NBA until the Charlotte Bobcats had a worse season in the lockout-shortened 2011-12 season. The hope to be entertained while reading the book was met, while the information in the book was not newly published or insightful. This despite the interviews Rosen conducted with several players.

The stories of what some of the players would say about coach Roy Rubin were funny as well as some of the antics of both coach Rubin and some players. Those anecdotes made good reading between game recaps. Those were short and read much like the box scores in the daily newspapers. While these allowed the reader to keep up with the progress of how poorly the team was performing, it did make the book feel more like a long newspaper article instead of a book.

The other disappointing aspect of the book for me was the errors that were in the book that didn’t require research or fact checking to point out. The most glaring of these was on the inside cover flap, where the coach of the team for the first 51 games of the season, Roy Rubin, was printed as “Lou Rubin.” There were two others I caught right away that were not about the 76ers, but still ones that even casual fans might catch. One was the name of Hall of Fame player Rick Barry, who was called “Rich” and the name of the team the 76ers defeated in the 1967 NBA Finals. That team was called the “Golden State” Warriors in the book, but they were known as the “San Francisco” Warriors at that time. These type of errors are the type that good editing would catch.

Between the errors and the style of writing in the book, this proved to be a disappointment to me as it was one I was eager to read. It does merit two stars for the entertainment aspect of the book. This book would be recommended only for a reader just wants to read it for entertainment and not for research or history.
