A Great Start for Budding Artists

I befriended the author and artist of this book on a website, and was amused to hear her low opinion of the book. I became curious and ordered it.

I am well beyond the reccomended age for the book, but I was able to use the basic drawing tips inside.

Yes, it's a very basic drawing level and you're not going to learn how to draw say, the Princess Mononoke style from this book.

But considering that it's aimed toward a younger audience, that makes perfect sense. It's easier for kids to draw fatter cheeks and bigger eyes.

I use this book a lot for my sketching and I would reccomend it to anyone who wants to work on facial expression or body shape.

A great book for the young artist or just someone who wants a little help with the basics.

Good for Starters

This book is good for starters who are just beginning to recognize their love for Manga, like me.

I'm no professional in drawing so this is why I said that, I read the other reviews and they sum up about how this book is for beginners but not professionals who want more, and I agree.

Would I recommend this book?

Yes, I will because it is a good book for starters mainly because of the step-by-step instructions. That will give Beginners an idea of how some Manga is drawn, but with that comes improvement. So don't worry if this book doesn't teaches the professional drawings, but things take time, and this book helps Starters get threw that "time".

Don't make my mistake

I got this book at a school book fair when I was eleven or twelve and loved it. I wasn't so much into anime/manga, but I loved how easy the style was to copy. NO. Big mistake. Today at nearly 21 years old, I'm still trying to undo the bad habits this book taught me. Katy Coope's drawing style wasn't a style at all - rather, it was a series of errors caused by not studying the human body. Her more recent work still reflect many of these errors as well. I understand that she was in her mid-teens when she made the book so you can't really blame her, but whoever gave it the OK to be published was being extremely irresponsible. I know many other artists who are trying to undo what this book taught them as well.

If you are planning to buy this book for a young artist, don't. It can only hurt them.

Pretty good, has some faults

On my quest to find an Android book that i like, i signed up for a Safari Books trial and read the first chapter of this book. So, this is a review of just the first chapter.

Happy about:

Starts projects with story boarding
Expects you to remember (or go back) to what was learned before to gain skill
Uses more than one orientation (to show how it works)
Uses more than one resolution (to show how it works)
Lots of images
Very clear steps
Expresses what is being done before doing it, in some cases
Explains again when listing the steps

Not so happy about:

Images and some instructions are out of date already (All Android books are plagued by this)
Doesn't look like a technical reviewer did a final check on the text
Some things are explained as they are being done (as opposed to beforehand)
Expected experience of reader seems to switch back and forth
Title is a bit of a misnomer
Expensive

I have mixed feelings over this book. First, it is very expensive. The publishers includes some online help, which, iiuc, is the digital book for 2 years (at which point the book will be woefully out of date) and some other things, which they list for about $50. If you subtract $50 from the price here, it becomes more reasonable for a very detailed hardcover book. Although, The ebook is nearly as expensive, which hardly seems justified.

Most of the book is both fine and clear, but little things just pop out here and there, and i'm just talking about the first chapter. They're insignificant on their own, but i think they ought to be noted. For example, in figures that are broken into multiple images, line numbers in the gutter switch from right justified to left justified. The wrong figure (figure 1-68) is referred to. The code download is missing some images and its not clear that the same images from another directory are to be used. Not much, but a technical reviewer should have caught this. Regardless, the overwhelmingly majority (and then some) of text is very clear.

The layout seems nice (i changed the width in Safari Books to use more of the page.) Steps are clearly boxed, and many images are referred to so you do not get lost. Some steps have changed because of later releases of Android, but nothing you can't figure out easily. Things are explained at length, starting with story boarding the project to show what will be done, and the author explains, quickly, that this is important. Ten points for that one. It so often is left unsaid. There doesn't seem to be any pseudo code, though. :)

I could not tell what level of expertise the author is targeting. The book seems to address people who are somewhat familiar with programming but want a walk through (with some hand holding) as the preview the uncharted wild terrain of Android. Then sometimes, there's too much detail. And then sometimes, things are reviewed too quickly. It's just a feeling. I get used to a book's method, and then don't think much about it. Here i kept thinking about it. That's all. Regardless, it's still good. It's not like anything is painfully explained or missing.

I really want a book that explains concepts. One that explains what will be done before it does it, while it does it, and perhaps even after it does it. Following step by step instructions without knowing the whole picture ahead of time is both confusing and boring. The book explains some concepts ahead of time, but some in the middle of doing it. (This is a legitimate method, so not too much is explained before doing anything. It's just not my preferred method.) Concepts explained ahead of time are repeated while going through the steps. That got me excited, and if that was done every time, i would love the book. Perhaps Instead of Android Programming Concepts, it should be named, Android Programming: A Step By Step Guide with Concepts. Well, that's ugly. But i think the current title is a bit (just a little) of a misnomer.

I'm off to check another book. If i can't find one, i would easily consider this a candidate despite its slight faults. If you are looking for a book on Android, and don't want to rush but rather understand what's going on, you probably want to look at this book. It is nicely written and explains a great deal.

The files needed to work through the book appear to be gone.

The book itself is pretty good. However, the exercises depend on graphics files. I can't locate the files anywhere. They give an address in the preface. If you go to that address it says the images are in the "Instructor Resources." I happen to be an instructor and so I registered and got access to the folder. However the images are not there. It would be kind of crazy locking the images away in a folder that isn't available to everyone. I wonder if there was a copyright problem or something that caused the authors to take down the images.

The Second World War, particularly after the entry of the United States, at first strengthened the dictatorships, but ultimately produced challenges to rule by authoritarian caudillos. The social upheavals accompanying the post-war export-led boom forced governments in each republic to address the question of economic, social and political reform.

Victor Bulmer-Thomas is Emeritus Professor of Economics at the University of London and Honorary Professor with the Institute of the Americas, University College London. He is also a Senior Distinguished Fellow of the School of Advanced Study at the University of London; an Associate Fellow in the Americas Program at Chatham House, where he was the Director from 2001 to 2006; and was Director of the Institute of Latin American Studies, University of London, from 1992 to 1998. His publications include The Economic History of the Caribbean Since the Napoleonic Wars (2012), The Political Economy of Central America Since 1920 (1987) and Input-Output Analysis for Developing Countries (1982). He is also co-editor of The Cambridge Economic History of Latin America (2006).

The stated purpose of Chideya's book is to "give readers a chance to question the depictions of race that have become standard in newspapers and on the nightly news, a map through the modern realities and misconceptions about race." She succeeds in 18 chapters, each of which discusses an issue, then examines the reality behind frequently asked questions and frequently held myths. For example, Chideya disputes the idea that most welfare mothers are black, have lots of children and no desire to work by citing figures on the ratio of black and white women on welfare, the average number of children each recipient has and their efforts in finding and keeping work. She uses this formula to tackle affirmative action, the armed forces, drugs, gangs, violence, sex, family values, politics and other issues. For someone with her news reporting background (a former staff reporter for Newsweek, she now works for MTV news), Chideya doesn't offer many supporting quotes. More personal insight from African Americans who have been stereotyped as the welfare mother, violent purse snatcher or hopeless drug addict would have offered greater readability and personality to what often sounds like a well-researched senior thesis. Still, the facts alone will make for good discussions after the evening news.

Enlightening book ALL should read!

Chideya's book dispells many popular myths about African Americans that are rampant in the media, literature, etc. She paints a vivid picture of how people perceive "others" and the misconceptions that are created and perpetuated by ignorance. I have been told that this book is no longer in print because of its content...probably because some people do not want the truth to be known! Farai Chideya's book is am important and enlightening one that should be read by anyone who is in search of the "real" truth! This is probably the most informative book I have come across in years...

More Relevant Today Than In 1995!

I read this book a long time ago and decided to re-read it recently due to some disturbing trends in how mainstream-controlled media depicts Black romantic relationships. I was again impressed with farai's even-handed statistical assessment and examples of how information about Black folks is twisted or is just not mentioned. It is still happening today on a more sophisticated level. The book made me take a fresh look at who benefits from this type of scapegoating and the steps that can be taken to counteract it. I would love to see a "Don't Believe The Hype 2""!

Chideya isn't a numbers person

Throughout much of this book, Chideya uses a very quantitative approach -with plenty of statistics- to prove her arguments. In my opinon though, she often doesn't supply all the pertinent stats, and occasionally draws conclusions that are either too simplistic or not suggested by the figures she uses. In all, I didn't feel like my own opinions were firmly challenged while reading this book.
