Many years ago I managed a firm where I began calling my colleagues, "my kids." This moniker was descriptive of both my affection for them and their childish behavior toward work and each other.

Now Nick McCormick has captured a wonderful collection of the childish things people do at work. Or... I should say... the clever and common things people do at work, which are, in fact, quite childish.

It's called, Acting Up Brings Everyone Down: The Impacts of Childish Behavior in the Workplace.

"The purpose of this book is to point out the silliness that we engage in at work in hopes that readers will acknowledge their actions, realize there are better and more constructive ways to act, and make the necessary changes to improve the work environment."

McCormick, though, instead of attacking us for our petty and counter-productive behavior, laughs at it with us.

Nick McCormick's wonderful new book addresses the issue of unproductive individual behavior in the workplace in a manner that engagingly and comprehensively meets the needs of both managers and the rest of us. Moreover, Nick introduces, illustrates, and presents the problem as more than just the product of inherently bad actors, but - potentially, at least - of all of us in our weaker or less thoughtful moments.

Using, as he did in his previous book Lead Well and Prosper, the characters of "Joe," "Wanda," and others from his blog, Nick walks us through a series of common negative - childish, even - behaviors we all will confess we are sometimes tempted to succumb to in various aspects of our lives. He then offers unmistakable elaborations and illustrations of not only how these temptations are problematic at work, but of how we all are vulnerable to exhibiting them there at one time or another. Having established what these examples are together with our individual relationships to them, each is then followed with refreshingly clear and frank advice and recommendations.

The treatment is friendly, honest, and inescapably engaging. It's like a conversation with a trusted friend or mentor, one that leaves you open to a more candid assessment of the motives behind your own actions at work, and better equipped to meaningfully - sympathetically - understand and deal with those of your colleagues.

The kind of thing that you need your mentor to tell you

It's a very positive book, and, I think, better than his last one, Lead Well and Prosper: 15 Successful Strategies for Becoming a Good Manager. Wanda and Joe, the lead characters in Lead Well, are back, but this book is less story and more guide. This makes it easier to read, as the characters aren't getting in the way of the advice.

This is the kind of thing that you need your mentor to tell you, because no one else will own up to the fact this type of behaviour goes on. A lot of it is common sense, but sometimes we need a kick to assess whether we actually behave in this way.

Enticing from beginning to end. The trials and tribulations of these people and, how they suffered in order to feed their families while living in squalor, under inhumane conditions, being deliberately driven into continually worsening situations in an attempt to make them give up their own homes. It was eye-opening to see the fear of those people already living out west and how they used to humiliate, beat, kill, or run these people off public lands because of their own fears that these arriving immigrants could only extend bad conditions on them on 'their' own lands. Those in California were starting to believe the propaganda that these Oakie's were bad people looking to do harm, steal food, trespass and take jobs at their next destinations. Truth is they were not greedy, or out to harm anyone else, all they wanted was a fair chance to raise their families in peace and, without the pains of starvation, in lands with ample fruit and, meat that in many cases went to waste due shear meanness by the owner of these products. Their tenacity was incredible as they continued to move on in an attempt to save the themselves, their familes and, friend's from starvation, illness, and, homelessness by moving them all to these strange lands in the west with the empty promise of unlimited work for all; this belief died as quickly as it came about for those that started their long trek's to these new promised lands as they would discover along the way. This alone would have been enough to stop most families in their tracks but, not the Joad's............they continued to race toward a dream that was truly a nightmare even after being warned several times that there would not be any work there. These people were tricked and/or forced into giving up their lives by 'them', & 'they', never knowing who 'them' and 'they' really were. Were 'they' the land owners, the banks, the government.....................it seems that the leaders of this farming movement were very successful by keeping them living in ignorance as these scoundrels stole their lives out from under them...............they were helpless until the point of anger. There stories are much more coarse than those of today but...............there are still the 'they's' and 'them's' out there today that control our everyday lives...........we're not really sure who they are but we follow them..........their modern handbills are the media who continue to lead us astray many times. I found this story of history to be intriguing and even more so I was surprised how closely it still resembles the society we live in today in so many ways. Great book.

The book is a classic that still reverberates in the America of 2015. Although most Americans do not want to admit it, the themes of the book are still relevant today. The excesses of greed and capitalism continue to plague our nation, and perhaps by reading the Grapes of Wrath modern Americans will be moved to confront some of the problems inherent in our economic and political systems.

The novel is pure Steinbeck - stark, clear, and unflinching. Although some today may have difficulty persevering through a long novel, the book represents what is great in American literature. It is impossible to conceive of a reader who is not moved by this extraordinary story. A must read.

Of Mice and Men is beautiful in its simplicity and concision while painting vivid scenes and directly touching on human thought and emotion. George and Lennie, the protagonists, evolve and depend on each other as they navigate through the lonely world. George acts as a father figure to Lennie, who retains a childish innocence while possessing incredible strength. Recognizing the danger of the two characteristics combined, George seeks to protect Lennie, and does so by not only saving him from the dangers of real life, but also defending him against the darkness of hopelessness. However, in the end, George realizes that he cannot forever protect Lennie, as he can only do so much to shield Lennie from reality.

I know that I am sure to be limited in my understanding of this book, but from what I understand, I love it. I especially love how the characters are so well developed - even Curley's wife, who, does not have a name not because Steinbeck disregarded her, but because she is a femme fatale figure who, despite being a 'tart' woman and therefore being supposedly inferior in status to men, is able to have such a great impact on the whole of the story. And it's so interesting that the man who falls into her femme fatale trap isn't ensnared by her beauty or sexuality, but simply because of his childish obsession with touching soft things.

So as a high school student who was “forced” to read this (it was on the summer reading list), I highly recommend this book.

What a journey!

I had no idea what to expect when I opened this book. As someone who battled infertility for years before conceiving twins via IVF, I was thrilled to finally see a book that promised to openly talk about the topic.

What I found was a heartwarming story about possibly one of the strongest women ever and the love for her children. Jill Murphy's story could easily be any woman's story who has dealt with adoption and infertility. I appreciated her candidness from her seventeen year old self, right up until the woman she's become.

Seeing adoption from both sides. Battling through infertility treatments. Maintaining a marriage. New relationships. Opening old wounds.

Wow. Honestly, just an amazing journey from start to finish.

This book is not a work of fiction. It's real. As real as real life gets and I applaud Jill for sharing her story with the world.

I'd encourage everyone to read it, especially if you're going through something similar or know someone that is. Hands down a 5 star read for sure.

This is a wonderful book and a beautiful story of one mother's journey on both sides of adoption.
Jill puts all of her emotions into words which makes the read even better! Even if you haven't been through adoption, you are able to relate to her journey in some way through her Faith, and how she was treated by friends and family and others. At some point in our lives we all have something 'inside' we want to get out somehow.
I highly recommend this book for anyone to read!!!

Reminds us all to put our faith in Him and follow to where He leads us. Thanks Jill for sharing your story. Not for the faint hearted

The book is well organized and covers an amazing lot of ground at a very fast pace. I find it suitable for a second course in complex analysis.

Proofs of the theorems are clearly outlined , but the reader is usually expected to fill in some of the details and that requires a good advanced calculus background, up to the elements of Lebesgue integration, series and point set topology. The exercises are comparatively easy (no solutions) and there is a lot of interesting gossip and good references to the literature.

If you have already seriously pondered good and evil reading this book will provide insights that you will not have considered. If you've not thought seriously much about that then you will after reading this book. Besides being a profound significant philosophical work it is an interesting story that will hold your attention and when you get to the last line, like me you will slowly fold up your reading glasses needing a moment to reflect on the experience you have had. This guy makes his characters real, you believe their experiences, and you live in the science fiction they are experiencing. You will wonder about your understanding of history. The way this is written brings their story to life in vivid relief. You will find yourself unable to put it down wanting to read just one more chapter and then just one more.

A fascinating weave of thought-provoking philosophy, futuristic vision, and action-packed thriller, A Mile North of Good and Evil entices the reader to examine how events or people are seen as "good" or as "evil." Portals technology has all but eliminated false documentation of history, and those who use it are well aware of the consequences of warfare and abuse of the environment. Yet the world continues to act in self-destructive ways. The central question being addressed is how to break the long-established pattern of negative thoughts and actions. In so doing, Hayes has cleverly used a crime thriller genre to engage the reader in reflection about what is, or can be, most meaningful in life. A very different and worthwhile read!

Enlightening sci-fi fun!

A Mile North of Good and Evil is such an intriguing novel it could start its
own category--SciFi Philosphy. It mixes a new twist on time-travel with the
search for a serial killer across the Alaskan wilderness and a new drug that
offers near-immortailty just as the Earth is about to be destroyed by shock
waves from a supernova. All this action spawns illuminating give-and-take
Socratic dialogs in which the author brings down to earth the meaning of
existence for those of us who don't normally read the great philosphers.
This is a very fun book for those who love a good tale and care about the
future of humanity.

Applying Traction to small consulting business

I read Traction in April 2010 and started applying it to my consulting business. We are an information technology consulting firm, with 10 consultants (including me) working on around 5 projects at any given time. Applying the EOS has brought about a big change in the way I approach my business. Our situation is typical of other consulting firms: 99% of the energy in the firm is spent on serving our clients, so not much attention is paid to "working on the business."

Rather than write a review of the book, I think some readers might benefit from seeing the practical application of the EOS model described in the book:

I did the Organizational Checkup candidly and scored 53%. Here's the status of the other areas:
1. Vision: Complete. Has been reviewed and updated with the input of the team. The V/TO is a very useful tool.

2. People: In progress. The Get It / Want It / Capacity assessment has been completed (with the team). The right person/right seat is a challenge because currently one person is occupying most of the seats. The book has given us the framework for right person/right seat and we are determining how to apply it without asking our team to overcommit themselves.

3. Data: We've created our initial scorecard, and we jointly reviewed it in May and June. The next monthly review is in mid-July, and we will be adding more metrics. More info here on my blog post: [...]

4. Issues: We had an external consultant spend time with us in June to observe our operations and provide us a candid assessment. As a result, we've got a list of issues and recommendations. The implementation of the major items is not yet certain. We have to face the choice between focusing on client work versus working on the business. Some of the issues won't be addressed until I remove myself substantially from client work and act like a CEO.

5. Processes: We were already fairly strong in the processes that affect our clients (project delivery, proposals, estimating, recruiting etc.). Some of our internal processes are being improved as a result of having worked on the scorecard.

6. Traction: We're not there yet (as of early July 2010). We need to make the tough choices (and accompanying investment in the roles) before we can have proper accountability, communication and teamwork for executing our plan and achieving our goals. Our focus remains on doing innovative things for our clients, and I believe that's the right thing to do. It will not be practical to hire a new CEO. So, I will be stepping away from billable roles, and "working on the business instead of in the business."

Overall, I highly recommend this book to any business owner who wants a frank assessment of what's going well and what can be done better. This book is like a mirror. In our case, it is motivational and will help provide a better experience for our team members and clients.

Useful -- if wholly understood and implemented unilaterally

This is essentially a self-help book for business executives. While there are many useful items in here it is ultimately steered towards generating more consulting business for the author and his fellow consultants. Much of the the useful advice listed in here is already understood by most employees at the most basic of companies under different names. Having worked at companies that implemented the processes discussed in this book and the former front runner From Good to Great I have some advice for business executives to ensure success in getting traction:

1. Read the entire book and comprehend.
2. If you use the quote "getting the right people into the right seats on the bus" in meetings with specific people in mind it is you that are in the wrong seat, the bus has no driver, and the wheels rotted away long ago. It may also be a shorter bus than you want.
3. Do not pick and choose sections to implement that fit your agenda.
4. Your "rocks" should not consist of delegating ill-conceived rocks to lower level employees.
5. If there is systemic failures within your company that have gone addressed for any significant duration, they will likely remain in place after implementing the processes in this book. This book exists simply to help you feel better that you "did something", much like any self help book.

This book is very similar to From Good to Great and is in fact referenced in this book. From Good to Great was, in its time was lauded as the self-help book for business leaders. From Good to Great recommended 11 companies business models as the absolute pinnacle of success for everyone to hold in high esteem. These were to be the companies that shifted from being just good enough (level 4) to great (level 5). Three of the companies that were listed are clearly not great: Wells Fargo (TARP bailout), Fannie Mae, and Circuit City. Of the 8 remaining companies only one outperformed the S&P 500 average. Beware of a self help book which references another self help book that demonstrated bad advice.

A business strategy book for the small business owner. One of many that might prove helpful.

I liked it. The book is well organized and does a nice job of expounding on its points. As I read it another book from 2007 came to mind: No Man's Land: What to Do When Your Company Is Too Big to Be Small but Too Small to Be Big. Both books are written for the small business owner who has gotten his company to a certain level, but things are not growing or moving forward. The book has an Intro and nine chapters as follows:

0. Introduction
1. The "Entrepreneurial Operating System"
2. Letting go of the vine
3. The vision component
4. The people component
5. The data component
6. The issues component
7. The process component
8. The traction component
9. Pulling it all together

The book basically is a discussion of a diagram the author calls the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) which consists of six components discussed in chapters three through eight. As I say above, I found the organization of the book to be good. However, I did not find the organization of the EOS to be particularly sound. Not too long ago I read and reviewed Be Bodacious: Put Life in Your Leadership which I thought would have been better written if it had promoted the following leadership system: (1) Dream, (2) Strategize, (3) Take Action, & (4) Persist. The vision component in EOS is comparable to the dream component, and the traction component in EOS is comparable to the take action component. So, in my humble opinion, the EOS is missing two components at a minimum: (2) strategize & (4) persist.

I found the discussions regarding the issues component and the data component to be very well done. I also liked the discussions regarding people and process. However, I was wondering about three more components that seemed relevant to me, but were missing: business models, finance, and marketing. It is so much easier to strategize productively regarding your business if you dissect the business model it uses to exist. Financing considerations are always important when it comes to business, and it is naïve to talk about taking your company to a new level without considering finance in a big way, i.e., devote a chapter and a component to it. Lastly, a business without marketing will probably not last long as a business. So there should have been a chapter and component devoted to it, too.

The author claims in his Introduction that he is putting a new slant on strategic planning for the small business. I agree he certainly has created the EOS which I have never seen in print before. However, the underlying principles discussed in this book have been around for a long time. This book could be tagged as the following: business strategy, project management, problem solving, or leadership. And many books on these subjects have existed prior to 2007. See The Complete Idiot's Guide to Project Management, 3rd Edition, Bare Bones Project Management: What you can't not do, and Scrappy Project Management: The 12 Predictable and Avoidable Pitfalls Every Project Faces.

Other books that might be of interest to the reader are: Making Things Happen: Mastering Project Management (Theory in Practice), The Fast Forward MBA in Project Management (Portable Mba Series), Ultimate Breakthrough Planning: The Business Funnel Approach, Run Your Business Like a Fortune 100: 7 Principles for Boosting PROFITS, and Being Strategic: Plan for Success; Out-think Your Competitors; Stay Ahead of Change. 4 stars!
