Glimmering Meditation On the Art of Living

Mark Nepo's small classic "FACING THE LION, BEING THE LION: FINDING INNER COURAGE WHERE IT LIVES" makes bold promises and largely delivers. I could quibble with elements of construction, and espouse frustration with the sinuous curves of narrative, or take issue with what sometimes feels to be disconnected topics, but in the end that's just life and that's what this book is all about. It's a small jewel that not only refracts and reflects but also generates light where there was darkness.

His core theme is courage and he leads an exploration that's centered on two facets. The first is how to get in touch with your core; that is, getting to know who you are, why you are that way, and then learning to just be yourself. He argues that this takes courage. We have to break through our ego attachments, the numbing of a thousand and one distractions, the reality of being spirit in a corporeal body, and shedding the inauthentic masks we wear to protect ourselves. These are significant tasks that require courage of self-reflection and a willingness to own what is ours. This is what he means when he talks about facing the lion.

Being the lion is the willingness and ability to show-up in the world while being true to our core. That extends to any and every situation where we have choices to make and where we interact with others. This is how he defines the spiritual life and notes that it isn't easy. There is risk in being misunderstood but the reward is a feeling of universal connection, not only with ineffable but with all of our fellows. Often the crucible is in relationships where Nepo asserts that we all screw-up and sometimes with considerable frequency. That's because of the inherent wear and tear of days. But he also claims that love is acceptance, not of behavior but of intent. Good relationships are those where love is the motivation.

"The ultimate aim of courage becomes a lifelong quest to know who we are, to care, and to find meaning in the face of death." In the end it's a brave book, one to be savored and not read for speed, that's often beautifully written and offers many moments of illumination. It's classified as self-help and it does help but there are no easy answers here. Instead, it offers a glimmering meditation on always becoming, Beginner's Mind, and the art of living. Although the book is mostly prose, Nepo is a poet so it's no surprise that this volume speaks at least as much to the heart as the mind, no small feat that.

A Poetic, Lyrical, and Practical Journey with the Lion within

This book is filled with pearls of wisdom and deep insights into the ageless wisdom. We get a glimpse of the author's own journey through life and the courage he has had to nourish. This is a deeply moving book and would be most enjoyed by anyone who is on a spiritual path and in need of courage during times where life seems to only bring trials and tribulations.

This Book Is a Beautiful, Truthful Miracle

Really, my title says it all. This book is so wonderful that I just had to write a review. It has deep truth beautifully written from the heart. It tells my truth so well that it had me crying several times. That hardly ever (never) happens, and I'm a professional ghostwriter, so I do a LOT of reading.

The thing that happens when someone has the courage to tell the truth as Mark Nepo does is that it makes everyone who reads it feel understood at last, validated, and not so alone. Mark, you gave me courage to keep following my dream and even to step up the action.

I think that this book probably tells everyone's truth many, many times. Mark, if you've been wondering what the gift is that you will give to the universe, you can stop wondering. Thank you so much.

Why should an artist bother to train their visual memory, and what does that even mean? Can't I just paint what's in front of me, or from a photograph, or from my imagination? These are the kinds of questions I get from students when I bring up the subject of memory drawing. The simple answer is, of course you can. However, having a well-developed visual memory can be of immense help to your from-life work as well as when working from your imagination.
Whether the end-goal is drawing, painting or sculpting directly from life or from your memory, memory drawing begins with an intentional effort to visually observe the subject. How well the subject is remembered is directly related to how well it is observed. In other words, artists need to become expert observers in order to have exceptional visual memories. This is true for many fields and very often the memory skill of experts is geared towards their expertise. In a sense, they expect to see what they are trained to see. They look for it.
As the subtitle of the book alludes to, this book is as much about learning to perceive what you see as it is about memory drawing.
Memory Drawing: Perceptual Training and Recall more fully answers the above questions and provides a curriculum for training your abilities to visually perceive and training your visual memory.

What a loss to both to art & society that we are not all taught this in school as children. Finally a modern well written guide to visual memory & visualization training that is not based upon intangible methods like meditation but practical art instruction.

Valuable information

There is no question that artists of the past used memory training as a means of study. The author clearly shows the historical and contemporary value of training one's visual memory and clearly explains the benefit to the serious student. Misunderstanding the purpose for memory training leads to a poorly reasoned attitude toward the practice. From the writings of Degas to Boisbaudran, training the visual memory is extolled and in Rousar's book both the importance of the practice historically and its practical use today are well defined.

Helpful exercises

The author does seem to have a slight bias toward a non-constructive approach to perception and drawing; but he still manages to keep the recommendations in this book fairly balanced. He certainly doesn't say that the perceptual and memory training advocated in the book is the end-all-be-all for every artist. Rather, he suggests that this kind of training is useful to artists with widely varying goals and approaches, which seems likely to be the case. The book is clearly written, and it includes both background material and lots of actual exercises along with the pictures required for them, and suggestions for creating your own exercises when you are finished with his. For all that, it's also not a very long book. Definitely a keeper.

Be Sure to Work the Problems

Galaxies in the Universe is an absolutely wonderful book. That being said, it is the type of textbook written so that the problems are an integral part of the text. That's not my personal preference because my schedule is such that I don't always have time to work them. The other problem with that style is that if you get stuck on any one problem, you run the risk of getting very little out of the rest of the book. Even so, most of the problems are very fun and not so difficult that someone who is strong in math and physics won't be able to get through them.

It is very definitely an introductory text intended to get one started on the basics before going to a different book to tackle harder material. By the end of the book you'll have done things like calculate the amount of dark matter that must exist within a given galaxy. My favorite part of this book is the section on gravitational lensing and dark matter. A long time ago I tried to decipher the original Kaiser and Squires article on the topic, and never really succeeded. This book explained the material with wonderful clarity.

The mathematical content of the book is relatively simple. Anyone familiar with multivariable calculus should be able to work through it without too much trouble. Some of the key results and ideas will be familiar to physics majors who've already taken a classical mechanics course or a thermostatistics course, but applied in a sufficiently different context that they don't seem redundant. This would be a good book for someone who has strong basics in general physics, is strong in undergraduate calculus, and has an interest in galactic astrophysics.

This book does an excellent job of delineating the many observations of galaxies, not only in the present but also in the formation of galaxies and clusters of galaxies since the big bang. Much of the contemporary theories about galactic structure and star movements is backed up with math. Since this is a textbook, there are many problems to work on, and there are solution hints in an appendix. I would recommend it to any serious student of astronomy and physics.

This is one of the clearest and best written undergraduate-level textbooks on galaxies, requiring a fair amount of mathematics and physics to fully appreciate the harder sections. However, things are very well explained in the clear prose, even if you don't want to grapple with the (not over-numerous) equations. Sparke and Gallagher are "good practical extragalactic astronomers" who distil for the reader much of the everyday knowledge used by the observational extragalactic astronomer, with a stronger focus on easier-to-appreciate observational results than on their complex and difficult derivations. This textbook sensibly begins with several chapters on the Milky Way galaxy, as our own Galaxy represents "baseline truth" in humankind's quest to understand the galaxies.
This book is easy to read and very well structured. But it is at the university level; so the reader must have some prior algebra, and the ideal reader of this book should also be comfortable with graphs and physical argument.

It's much more than a treatise on football; it's an exploration of the limits of conventional thinking and how strategic changes affect the value of quick-footed behemoths. However, while most reviewers are positive, something holds them back. Maybe Lewis makes it all look too easy. Or perhaps, as The New York Times charges, he takes the easy route through a complicated set of stories. That he makes it easy for his reader to comprehend—and enjoy—is enough for most critics to give Lewis's latest a rousing cheer.

The defensive linemen rushing the quarterback from that side often arrive undetected and thus can inflict great damage on the opponent's key offensive player as he sets himself to pass. The key to minimizing quarterback damage is an effective offensive left tackle. Lewis, most recognizable as the author of the best-selling Moneyball (2003)--about the growing reliance on statistical analysis in baseball--describes the NFL's ever-growing obsession with left tackles as a means to counter defenders who seem to grow bigger, stronger, and more vicious each season. He juxtaposes that narrative with the unlikely story of Michael Oher, who was living on the streets of Memphis when he was 15 years old. He also happened to be six-feet-five-inches tall, weigh 350 pounds, and possess definite athletic talent. Almost through sheer serendipity, he is adopted by a wealthy family whose members make it their mission to see that he has an opportunity to benefit from his amazing physical gifts. The book works on three levels. First as a shrewd analysis of the NFL; second, as an expose of the insanity of big-time college football recruiting; and, third, as a moving portrait of the positive effect that love, family, and education can have in reversing the path of a life that was destined to be lived unhappily and, most likely, end badly. Better than the movie

Here's what I like about Michael Lewis - he is able to seamlessly interweave compelling personal stories within a larger context. Before reading this book I'd seen the movie, so I thought I knew what I was in store for: a feel good story about a down and out kid with an extraordinary talent who also happens to find a family in an unexpected place.

And of course this book has all of that - minus a lot of the emotional elements that the film focused on. But what made this book great was that it explained to me (a football idiot) what it was about this boy that made him so sought-after in the football world, and how the evolution of the game of football to it's current incarnation had created a niche into which he was perfectly designed to fit.

What I thought would be a moving story of one man's triumph in overcoming unbelievable adversity became even more than that. The writing was concise, clear, and at times humorous. The big-picture concepts and the technical details of the mechanics of the game were seamlessly interwoven with the personal story to create an incredibly detailed and rich overall mosaic.

Highly recommended!

About 2 weeks ago my wife and I watched a great movie - The Blind side - which tells the story (somewhat fictionalized) of Michael Oher. I thought the movie was very good and very interesting and I had noted that it was based on a book. This book. So I went on Amazon and downloaded it to my Kindle. While the movie dealt only with Michael Oher - who (if you don't know) is the left tackle for the Balimore Ravens - the book deals, to some extent, equally with the changes in the NFL that have made the quarterback - and thus the left tackle - so much more important.

The book pretty much alternates chapters which retell Mr. Oher's saga growing up as an underprivileged child in the worst parts of Memphis and getting adopted by a well-to-do family with chapters about the changes that have occured in the way NFL football has been played over the past 30 or so years. There are anecdotes from Bill Parcells and other football notables as well as discussions with the people in Mr. Oher's life.

While being a football fan definitely helps your enjoyment of this book - if you really don't like football at all you might just want to watch the movie which I also highly recommend - it's not totally necessary. Unlike many books centered around sporting events or figures, this one leaves a lot of the jargon at home (probably because the author, Michael Lewis, is not a football person) and tells of the evolution of modern football, including the changes that free agency brought, while at the same time telling a heart-wrenching story about a young man who - in spite of the odds - found love and family and made himself a success.

I've read a lot of books that were turned into movies and they usually disappoint. My general rule is - either the book or the movie. This book - and this movie - are definitely the exceptions to the rule. As I said, if you don't like football at all skip the movie. But, if you like it - even just watching a game on Thanksgiving, or going to cheer for your local high school team once a season - pick up The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game. I know you'll enjoy it.

About a Player, Yes, but More So About a Rare Family's Charity

If you're a fan of high school, college, or NFL football, this book is a great read. If you're interested in discussions of class economics or discourses on race, this book is a great read. Or if you just want to read a book that will make you laugh, challenge you, and sometimes make you questions of the motives of the protagonists, this book is a great read.

The only hesitation I have about the book is that I think it purports to be about Michael Oher, the high school and college phenom left tackle. In a lot of ways it is, but only to the extent that Lewis wanted to tell Oher's story. On the other hand, however, what Lewis is really exploring in this book is why and how a rich, white couple (Sean and Leigh Ann Tuoy) from one of the most segregated cities in America (Memphis) would become invested in young black kid who is ironically simultaneously almost impossible to notice and impossible to ignore.

In some ways, I think Lewis is interested in the Tuoys' investment in Michael as a person as is contrasted against the system's (Briarcrest High School Athletics Dept, Ole Miss University, and every other major college football program in the country, and the NFL). Everybody seems to want something from him, and that thing is immediately apparent and almost assured. But the Tuoy's were invested in him long before they realized just how good a player he was. In that sense, his incredible success seems to make their investment both charming and sincere.

Tough to admit (and Lewis doesn't address this at all, really) that I wouldn't have been interested in reading about the Tuoy's charity or Oher's luck had it not been for his incredible physical gifts. Maybe that's the real lesson of the book.

ISBN: 0275495302 (also ISBN 0500201285) is an exclusively black & white, concise and copiously illustrated survey in English only of 51 major works on 203 pages revised in 1972 (first published in 1965) and similar to ISBN-10: 8425214769 published in 1992 by Gustavo Gili (GG) on 208 pages in the Works and Projects series in English and Spanish side by side. A short introductory part on several pages is followed by the main review part presenting each shortly described project in excellent B&W photos, plans, sections, elevations, hard line presentation drawings, models, sketches, etc. The book is ended with a biography, bibliography, list of collaborators, etc. on several pages. Most of 126 only B&W illustrations are technical, but all (incl. B&W photos) are of a good quality, well balanced, crisp and legible. Like all from the Works and Projects series, it is solid among architectural monographs, but slightly smaller than the same book in in the Studio Paperback series published in English and German side by side by Artemis (Zürich) under ISBN: 3760881025, and by Birkhäuser under ISBN: 3764356197 (Basel...) and ISBN: 0817656197 (Boston), and under ISBN: 3764355514 not in English, but in German and French side by side.

A More Objective Review

Considering the only other review for this book currently available, I felt compelled to write a review that is actually about the book, not the subject of the book. A Harvard professor deserves at least that. Perry Miller's classic introduction to the New England Puritans remains an essential text for anyone seeking to understand the complexities of a much maligned and often misunderstood religious movement. An understanding of the New England Puritans is absolutely essential to an understanding of American History and American society. Miller does not espouse the doctrines of Puritanism; he provides a concise and helpful historical background and then guides the reader through some representative samples of their writing. This is not a book designed to convert someone to Puritanism. A sidenote: The Puritans referred to in this book have not existed for centuries, so I assure you no reviewer of this book actually left the Puritanism described in this book.
